On Top Of The World 10 January 2011 Day 5

Gondola to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain

Today I was up bright and early, I had booked a taxi for 08:30am to take me to Pao de Acucar or as I would say The Cable Car this will take me up to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain. I had been advised to arrive early to miss the Tour Buses and try and make some of it before it was too hot, the forecast today is 37c. I arrived at the Cable Car Satation at 9am and there were very few people about.

On the way up!!View of Christ The Redeemer half way up

After purchasing my ticket I boarded the first of two cable cars to take me to the top. The first leg takes about 4 minutes and takes you to the top of Morro da Urca (Urca Hill) this is 224 meters. The second stage takes you to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain and takes about another 5 minutes and is 395 meters high.

Copacabana BeachWhy won't they wait until I hold my breath in!!

Another bad video!!

Unfortunately this time of year is not the best for the views because of the heat haze, but even so the views are spectacular!! Even at this height the statues of Christ the Redeemer is even higher. I caught my first real sight of Copacabana Beach. At the top you are certainly up with the birds and planes. I ended up spending about 2 hours at the top there is a nice little Cafe where you can sit and admire the view and do some people watching.

This Gondola was used from 1912 - 1972View of beach from bus

Once I returned to the bottom the tricky part was to begin and that was to take my first public bus. I walked down the main street and found a bus stop now I thought that was a really good beginning. After about 5 buses had stopped non displaying where I wanted to go I started to wonder if a taxi back would be the best option. The problem is the roads are so wide and separated by trees in the middle. Then suddenly as if hit by lightening it occurred to me I was on the wrong side of the across to the other side I went and the second bust that stopped showed as one of the destinations Gloria, now I know this is close to where I was heading as Gloria is the Metro Station for Lapa. I managed to get a seat by an open window, by now it was very very warm. The bus trip was nice I can think of no other City in the world where you go along with sky scrapers on one side and the beach on the other.

Once I arrived at Gloria I found a nice little restaurant and had some very nice grilled sardines and a Salad. After lunch I decided I would go and re find The Opera House and see if it was possible to join a tour, unfortunately they are refurbishing the inside at present so no tour. I walked round Gloria and Lapa for a bit longer and then caught bus number 2 for the day, the one to take me back to Santa Teresa this time I did get on the right side of the street as it was a one way street and I had been told exactly where to catch it.

Some more Street Art sometimes it just feels like you are walking round a big open air Art Gallery I love it
